Ehuru, also known as calabash nutmeg or African nutmeg, is a highly aromatic spice with a nutmeg-like flavor, though slightly more tart. It is used in stews, soups, cakes, and desserts, as well as for medicinal purposes and as an insect repellent. The seeds are also made into necklaces.
Ehuru, also known as African nutmeg or calabash nutmeg, has a warm, smoky aroma and a mildly spicy, nutty flavor. It’s traditionally roasted and ground before use, adding depth to dishes like pepper soup, ofe nsala, and sauces. Roast lightly until fragrant, then grind to a fine powder. Use about ¼ to ½ teaspoon per pot — a little goes a long way. Best added early during cooking to allow the flavor to infuse slowly into the dish.
